Rhinoplasty ReviewRhinoplasty is also known as a nose job

Rhinoplasty can change your appearance and give you more self-confidence

Rhinoplasty is also known as a nose job, this is designed to reshape the nose, and is also the most common plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury, or help relieve some breathing problems.

Rhinoplasty can change your appearance and give you more self-confidence. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon and ask any questions you need to know.

Rhinoplasty can also cause some complications, such as infection, nosebleed, or a reaction to the anaesthesia. To reduce the risks of complications follow your surgeon's instructions carefully for both before and after the surgery.

After surgery, you may see small burst blood vessels and tiny red spots on the skin's surface; these are usually minor but could also be permanent. Scarring can also appear, from inside the nose but there is no visible scarring at all. When a open technique is used, or when the procedure calls for the narrowing of flared nostrils, the small scars on the base of the nose can sometimes be non visible.

In the consultation, the surgeon will ask what you'd like your nose to look like and what not to look like, and will evaluate the structure of your nose and face. He/she will also explain the factors that can influence the procedure and the results. These factors include the structure of your nasal bones and cartilage, the shape of your face, the thickness of your skin, your age, and your expectations.

Your surgeon will give you instructions on how to prepare yourself for surgery, which will also include guidelines such as what to eat and no to eat and risk on drinking, smoking, taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications, and washing your face properly. All these instructions should be followed before and after the operation. Follow these instructions and your surgery will go smoothly.

Other arrangements should be made such as, someone to drive you home after your surgery and to help you out for a few days if needed, also book time off work as surgery will take time to heal.

Complex procedures may require a short inpatient stay.

Rhinoplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and on what you and your surgeon prefer.

Local anaesthesia means you are lightly sedated, so your nose and the surrounding area will be numbed; you'll be awake during the surgery, but relaxed and this will be pain free. With general anaesthesia, you will be asleep through the operation and won’t feel any pain.

During the first twenty four hours your face will feel puffy, your nose may ache. You can control any discomfort with the pain medication prescribed by your surgeon. Plan on staying in bed with your head elevated for the first day.

There will also be swelling and bruising around your eyes this will come first, apply a cold compresses which will reduce this swelling and make you and your face feel better. Most of the swelling and bruising should disappear within two weeks after surgery.

A little bleeding is common during the first few days following surgery, and you may feel some stuffiness for several weeks this is normal when having Rhinplasty. Your surgeon will probably ask you not to blow your nose for a week or till the tissues heal.

By the end of one or, occasionally two weeks, all dressings, splints, and stitches should be removed.

If you have any question, problems or just want advice then visit your local GP or the surgeon who performed your surgery.
