Liposuction will improve your body shape and is designed to remove unwanted fat.

Liposuction, is also known as lipo sculpture, which is a cosmetic surgery operation which will improve your body shape and is designed to remove unwanted fat from areas of the body. The hips are the most commonly treated, and liposuction can also be performed on the tummy, thighs, inside of the knees, ankles, upper arms, neck and back.

Liposuction can remove fat that you have not been able to lose through a diet or regular exercise.

Liposuction is not a treatment for weight control or obesity and it will not be able to remove cellulite or stretch marks.

There is a limit to the amount of fat that can be safely removed from an area at once so if you have a lot of fat to remove then sessions may be advised. The maximum of three litres of fat can be removed at one time only, so it may not be possible to slim down an area as much as you wanted.

Your surgeon will discuss how to prepare for your operation. He/she may ask you to do the following:

You may be asked to stop taking the contraceptive pill six weeks before surgery and use an alternative method of contraception as this will reduces the risk of blood clotting, also known as (thrombosis) after the operation.

You may be asked to give up smoking, smoking can increases the risk of chest infection and may slow the healing of wounds as well as increasing the risk of blood clots in the legs.

Your surgeon may ask you to stop taking any medicine such as aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines two weeks before surgery as they increase the risk of excessive bleeding.

Your surgeon will talk to you about the operation as well as prepare you, and you will then have to sign a consent form for legal reasons. The consent form confirms that you understand the risks, benefits and possible alternatives to the procedure and have given your permission for he/she to go ahead with the operation.

Your surgeon will then draw on your body which indicates where he/she is going to perform the liposuction, the surgeon will also make sure the marks are where you would like them and explain them to you. The surgeon will then take a photograph before the operation, so you can see the results after surgery and can compare them with your original appearance.

Liposuction is usually done under a general anaesthetic, which means that you will be asleep throughout the procedure and will feel no pain. If not the surgery can also be performed under local anaesthetic which will numb the area but you also be awake.

Liposuction may be carried out as a day case, which means that you can have the operation and go home the same day.However, for more extensive treatment, an overnight stay could be necessary.

You may have some side effect such as, feeling sick this will be because of the general anaesthetic.

You may have excessive bruising, which can be painful and usually takes up to a month to disappear.

Lumpiness or swelling, which may take up to six weeks to completely settle

You may develop some scars, typically 1-2 cm long, pink and noticeable at first, which should become finer after a few weeks.

You also may find thrombophlebitis developing also known as (inflammation of the veins) you will see them inside your knee or the inner part of your upper thigh if these areas are treated, then they should settle after a few weeks.

Swollen ankles are also side effects

If you have large areas treated they can some times be prone to anaemia, you may need to take iron tablets for about a month after the operation. Consult your doctor if so and seek medical advise and help.
