How you can beat the blues this winter!
When daylight hours are reduced in autumn and winter its not unusual to experience some form of depression. While some just feel a bit blue others can suffer from more severe bouts of depression, or SAD (seasonal affective disorder). But however the seasons changing affect you; there are some things you can do to help make those dark mornings and nights more bearable.
1.Eat well
Winter blues can make you crave food that is high in sugar and generally not very nutritious. While this can make you feel temporarily better, in the long term this won’t help beat the blues. Many advise a balanced diet with plenty of nutrition to help beat the blues and increase energy levels. Other top tips include:
•Eating Bio yoghurt to help boost immunity
•Increasing water intake to increase hydration
•Eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day
•Start the day right with a healthy breakfast
•Avoid too much caffeine – it can make you feel better in the short term, but longer term it can make your mood worse.
2.Exercise
It’s important to keep activity levels up during the winter to avoid those extra pounds piling on as well as decreasing stress levels – plus exercise can help increase your energy levels! You don’t have to go to the gym; a simple brisk walk or bike ride will do the trick.
3.De-stress with Yoga or Pilates
Reduce your stress levels and learn to relax through taking up yoga or pilates. Remember you don’t have to commit to classes as there are now lots of DVDs available, so you can learn yourself in your own home.
4.Light therapy
Using daylight bulbs (available from most homeware retailers) in lamps can increase the amount of daylight you have. This is a common tool used for those who suffer with SAD and can help with winter depression.
5.Treat yourself!
Boost your mood with a nice treat such as a massage, beauty treatment or new hair do – it’s always a good way to de-stress!
6.Talk to your friends and family
Family and friends can provide great help and support if you are feeling down, so don’t forget you can always talk things through. However, if you do suffer from continuous and serious feelings of sadness you should consult your GP.
