Apparently our body is two thirds water, yet many of us drink too much caffeine which increases dehydration, causing the body to lose water. We could all do with drinking more water, so here at Funky female we thought we’d give you some more encouragement by outlining the health benefits of drinking water.
Water can help with weight loss
A great benefit of drinking water is that it can naturally reduce your appetite. It is common knowledge that many confuse hunger with thirst, so eat something when their body really needs liquid. Also, while drinking more water cannot cause weight loss alone, by drinking more water, many on a diet find they eat less.
Water can clear your skin
Water can work wonders for your skin, not only can it help hydrate and reduce dryness, it can also flush out toxins in the body, clearing skin of bacteria.
Water can help reduce headaches
Another benefit of drinking water is that it can reduce and stop headaches and dizziness that can be caused by dehydration. It’s best to try drinking water when a headache starts, rather than reaching for any pills as it could simply be dehydration which can easily be cured. In addition, dizziness can also be reduced by drinking water as this is often caused by fatigue, which again can be a sign of dehydration.
Water can help your bowels
While regular fibre can help reduce the problem of constipation and even piles, drinking water will ensure the fibre works properly. If you don’t get enough fluid, your colon will take water from your stools to maintain hydration, thus causing constipation.
Water can help your muscles and exercise regime
If levels of fluids are not maintained, especially when exercising, muscle fatigue can set in. It’s recommended to ensure you avoiding dehydration as well as maintaining your performance, you drink water before and regularly during exercise to replace the fluids lost through sweating.
Water can give you more brain power
Another health benefit of drinking water is that it can boost your concentration. As your brain is around 85% water, so keeping it hydrated is important to ensure continued concentration as well as avoiding short term memory loss.
Water is good for the kidneys
The kidneys help to rid the body of toxins as long as there is enough intake of fluids. If you are properly hydrated, urine should flow freely and be pale in colour and odorless. However, if you are suffering from dehydration and your body is not getting enough fluid, urine’s smell and concentration will increase as the kidneys keep the fluid for other bodily functions.
How can you drink more water?
So you have heard the benefits of drinking water, but how can you ensure you increase you fluids and stay hydrated?
Keep a bottle of water in your car or at your desk – this will really help you drink more as whenever you fell thirsty you can reach for some water.
Make sure you drink with your meal or snack, again a great way to keep yourself hydrated.
Increase the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat as they can contain significant amounts of water and help ensure hydration.
