How to ensure you get perfect eyebrowsWith our top tips for eyebrow grooming

Ensure your brows don't make you look permanently suprised with our guide to how to shape your eyebrows properly!

A good eyebrow shape can really make all the difference – helping to open your eyes, making you look younger as well as more rested. We've put together some top tips on eyebrow grooming to ensure you have the perfect brows!

Be prepared!

When shaping eyebrows, make sure you've got the right tools for the job. You will need a large-sized mirror which is near natural light so you can see your brow clearly as well as a good pair of tweezers. Poor quality or blunt tweezers can cause hairs to break and not be plucked properly, leading to infections. Finally a small eyebrow brush is also handy – but you can also use a small toothbrush or an old mascara wand (make sure it's been cleaned!).

Finding the best eyebrow shape

Might sound obvious, but you really do need to find the right shape for you and then stick with it. The best eyebrow shape will ensure the edge of your brow, nearest your nose, is aligned with the corner of your eye, while the arch should trail the curve of your upper eye line. Try to avoid making your eyebrows too short in length – you can judge the length your brow by looking at your under eye and the line it makes, follow this line up towards where it should meet the brow.

Eyebrow shaping tips

Now you have to tools and have discovered your perfect shape, it's time to get down to the business of plucking. Make sure you choose the right time to do your eyebrow grooming – so make it the day before your date or dinner, as the red eyebrow look is not a good one! Reshaping your brows can take up tp 40 minutes, so don't rush and leave yourself plenty of time.

Firstly, brush your eyebrow into its natural shape so you can see what you need to do and then we would recommend to apply a warm flannel to your eyebrow area as this will make it much easier to pluck.

Then pluck each hair at a time by gripping it firmly and then pulling it in the direction it grows. It's best to start working from under the brow from the inside, by your nose, to the outside – also don't forget the stray hairs between your brows. It's best not to pluck above your eyebrows as it will make your look slightly odd.

Remember that 'less is more' in getting the perfect brows – pluck less than you need to as you can always go back and remove more hairs later. Eyebrow hair can take quite a while to grow back and takes longer the older you are.

Keep checking the balance of your eyebrows in the mirror and that they match, then apply a cold flannel to help reduce the redness once you have finished.

If you're still not sure

We're not all expert beauticians, so if you are worried about doing a bit of DIY on your brows, we'd recommend a trip to your local beauticians for a quick eyebrow wax and shape. It's relatively cheap and then you can always pluck out rouge hairs in between visits.
